It seems the corners are not pin sharp at f/1,4 or f/2 (I would have perhaps expected a little bit more at f/2 but not f/1,4) while the center is very sharp at f/1,4. Midfields..we'll see. The weight isn't that much higher than the Sony GM, it's not like the Sigma 20 1,4 vs Sony's 20 1,8 in terms of handling

Sharpness isn't always the greatest design priority for wide open on a lens, especially one they are touting for astro. Correction of astigmatism, chromatic abberation and comatic abberation look like they have taken centre stage and I am glad of it. I hate winged stars. This looks good so far. I would have one if I shot E mount no doubt.

Nope, and that's exactly how Canon and Nikon want it. That may be the right business decision for them, of course -- they know better than any of us what matters most to their bottom line -- but it does continue to provide other mounts (especially Sony) with a competitive advantage.

Not a big dela for me, I have the older EF version of this lens which fits perfectly with the adapter on my R6. And it is tack sharp with the stars, even at f/1.4.

@ The Lamentable Lens - The only problem I see for Sigma is Sony appears to be creating native Sony lenses that compete with the Sigma Art lenses. The Sony 14 f/1.8 is a perfect example. Very sharp lens that weighs a fraction of the Sigma and is also quite a bit smaller for the same price as the Sigma. If Sony keeps on their trajectory Sigma is going to have a hard time selling Art lenses to Sony users.

The big thing you overlook though is pricing. There is quite a big difference and that matters a lot for many if not most buyers. If you get 90-95% of the performance for 60-70% of the price if not cheaper, then that's a good enough option.

The 14mm is a bad example as it is an adapted DSLR lens.

But it is already the case for the 24mm F1.4, 35mm F1.4, etc...
The Sigma is
- a bit heavier
- a bit slower to focus
- a bit less sharp
>significantly cheaper

That has always been the appeal of third party lenses. You get 90% for 60% of the money.
The idea that you get 120% for 60% of the money only settled in when sigma was competing with decade old first party lenses that CaNikon had no intention of upgrading

There is a difference in price between the Sigma 14 Art and the Sony. The Sigma is $1 more expensive.

Sigma Art lenses - really the only Sigma I would buy are expensive, heavy and big. From what I see, Sony is coming aggressively after the same market as Sigma Art lenses. If Sony releases very similar primes that are very high quality and lighter and smaller they will erode the major market for Sigma Art lenses.

Sure Sigma will still have the c lens market for now. As Sony has built a lot of nice expensive lenses, will be interesting if they start releasing cost effective lenses that are within 10-15% of the 3rd party market.

BTW, not looking to getting into a debate. I am just posting my observations. Sony is very aggressive and will be interesting to see their directions in lenses over the next 2-5 years.

Sigma is moving Sony E mount lenses. If not Art, the Iseries. They are very popular. They keep coming for a reason.

@mferencz - Sure, but Sony has a lot of E mount lenses, now Sony's lens expansion is going into areas that have been carved out by 3rd parties - like the Sigma Art lenses. Sony is going to keep adding new lenses and over the next few years some of the 3rd party lenses will have competition from Sony on quality, size and weight.

Odd to cherry-pick an older lens that's specifically not a part of the mirrorless DG DN lineup. What about the exact lenses in this article? Or other Sigma DG DNs for that matter, like the 35 F1.4, 85 F1.4 or the 24-70 F2.8?

I did not cherry pick anything. I happen to own the Sigma 14 f/1.8 Art lens. The comparison came from a B&H sales person at the Outsiders conference earlier this year. They showed me both lenses side by side. Maybe Sigma should start updating their lenses if they don't want them compared to new lenses.

You can believe that Sony is not going to release lenses that compete with the ART lenses. I believe Sony is going to very aggressive to increase their lens lineup. They may let 3rd party lens companies create E mount lenses, but they have no issues with creating competitive lenses.

As of August 8th 2022 CE: There are ZERO non Nikon or non Canon lenses for the Z and "R" mounts.

This is unlikely to change for years, at least for AF lenses, but even MF lenses would present some engineering problems for the likes of Sigma and Tamron, example aperture control.

You continue to evade the question though, what about the rest of their lineup?

If one single lens matches the price of the Sony, you automatically dismiss the pricing of the rest? What about those lenses I mentioned?
